Searching Genus for Verbena
The perennial species of this genus are primarily North American natives and provide a number of outstanding plants for the border.
Late Summer to Fall
I am very fond of this tall verbena and include it in my garden most years. Clusters of deep purple-pink flowers appear at the ends of wiry stems. As their growth habit is tall and thin they are easy to intersperse among other earlier blooming perennials. Their architectural quality and late blooming habit are to be cherished. Hardy to Zone 6, otherwise start early for first year bloom and have it self-sow to perpetuate itself.
Easy, warm germinator.
100 seeds $3.50
Native to eastern North America growing in damp thickets, on shores and along roadsides. An attractive perennial with violet-blue flowers on showy candelabra-like spikes. In ancient times it was thought to be a cure-all among medicinal plants and the genus name is Latin for "sacred plant." For full sun in ordinary soil. Soundly perennial. Wild collected in Ontario.
Cold treatment (for highest rates) or GA-3 for germination at warm (about 60%).
