Searching Genus for VERNONIA
A huge genus of up to 1000 species of perennials, subshrubs, trees and woody climbers, mostly from South America, but with a few species scattered in the rest of the world with the North American sorts being the perennials. These are vigorous, sturdy late flowering plants for moist, fertile soil in full sun. Best for prairie or wildflower gardens. The common name refers to the rust color of the spent flower heads.
New York Ironweed
Native to eastern North America. Glabrous to slightly hairy foliage with lanceolate leaves, making substantial clumps. Tall stems carry open cymes of rich crimson-purple flowers. A very welcome addition to the autumn garden. Easy in rich, moist soils.
Cold treatment required.
