Searching Genus for VERBASCUM

VERBASCUM(MULLEIN)Family: SCROPHULARIACEAE
The mostly biennial mulleins are conspicuously and unaccountably neglected by North American gardeners. Perhaps we are too used to the common mullein of Canadian roadsides that we are unwilling to look at the considerable virtues of this genus.

VERBASCUM blattariaEarly Summer3593
Moth Mullein30-90cm  Zone: 4
Low rosette of green foliage. Creamy white or yellow five-petalled saucer-shaped flowers on long racemes.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
50 seeds  $3.50

VERBASCUM bombyciferumMid to Late Summer3606
Turkish Mullein1.5-2m  Zone: 3
Native to Asia Minor producing a massive rosette of wooly, silvery leaves. Impressively tall and downy spires of light yellow flowers make a majestic mid-summer statement. In the wild, this plant grows in inhospitable, hot sites in poor soil, but will also thrive in better conditions in the garden.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
50 seeds  $3.75

VERBASCUM chaixii album3594
As above, but with white flowers and mauve eyes.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
100 seeds  $4.25

VERBASCUM densiflorumLate Summer3614
Dense-Flowered Mullein1.2
Native to central Europe. Above rosettes covered with hairy grayish-yellow hairs, large bright-yellow flowers densely set along erect stalks.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
50 seeds  $4.00

VERBASCUM eriophorum3613
3m
Native to northern Greece, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia. This is a rare, very tall species to 3m. The beautiful basal leaves are grey and very soft to the touch. Dense and woolly flower stalks carry relatively large flowers, dotted along the stems. Can be confused with V. phlomoides, which is shorter (to 1.5m) and more widespread throughout Europe and western Asia.

Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
100 seeds  $4.00

VERBASCUM levanticumEarly Summer3616
A rarely-seen slender species native to Turkey, Israel and Lebanon. Purple-centered yellow flowers in early summer.

VERBASCUM nigrumSummer3596
120cm  Zone: 3
Large, dark green leafy rosette and a candelabra of yellow flowers with reddish brown centers. One of Wilder's favorite Verbascums and apparently one of the few species reliably hardy in Zone 3.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
100+ seeds  $4.00

VERBASCUM phlomoidesSummer3598
180cm  Zone: 4
This species is native to Europe, growing on stony, uncultivated ground. Covered with dense, woolly, whitish or yellow hairs. A densely packed spike of rather large bright yellow flowers.

VERBASCUM species 'Electric Yellow'Summer3601
100cm  Zone: 3
I am very grateful to Belinda Gallagher for collecting fresh seed of our original introduction of Verbascum Electric Yellow, which was first offered in our catalogue 15 years ago, and which we lost in the move to Nova Scotia. Our original description follows:

Original seed of this plant was collected in Monet's garden in Giverny and passed on to us by a customer in Zone 3 Cantley, Quebec. It has large 3" luminous yellow flowers with deep orange stamens on a tall densely crowded flowering spike, beloved by bees. Flowering is over a long period until hard frost. Individual flowers open during the night and last until the following afternoon and look beautiful floating in a bowl.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
50 seeds  $4.00

VERBASCUM species 'Electric Yellow' (White Form)3763
This is the lovely white form of the large-flowered Verbascum "Electric Yellow". Open pollinated, so you will likely obtain yellow forms as well.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
50 seeds  $3.75
