SPILANTHES

SPILANTHES oleraceaSummer to Early Fall3352
Toothache Plant30-35cm
This unusual tender perennial (Zone 10?)is a member of the Compositae family native to the tropics of Africa and South America and grown as an annual in the north. Above edible bronze-coloured foliage, eye-catching golden yellow flowers with deep burgundy-red eyes on long, pendulous stems. Wonderful in containers.
The leaves and flowers have a taste and properties similar to coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). It stimulates the flow of saliva which cleanses the mouth, tones the gums, and enhances immune function. It is called the toothache plant because when you chew on the leaves or flowers it produces a numbing effect.
