SILPHIUM(COMPASS PLANT)Family: COMPOSITAE
20 species of tall perennials native to North America with starry, sun-flower like heads and interesting foliage. The leaves, particularly on young plants, are erect and oriented so that the edges point north-south and the flat surfaces face east-west. Hence the common name. The midday sun, therefore, strikes the narrow edge of the leaves. The sap of many species contains resin.
