20 species of tall perennials native to North America with starry, sun-flower like heads and interesting foliage. The leaves, particularly on young plants, are erect and oriented so that the edges point north-south and the flat surfaces face east-west. Hence the common name. The midday sun, therefore, strikes the narrow edge of the leaves. The sap of many species contains resin.
Native from Ontario into the southern USA and found in damp to moist soil in open woodlands or prairie. Multi-stemmed and erect, in a massive clump from a woody rootstock. Beautiful large, cuplike, perfoliate leaves which collect rainwater and account for the common name. An abundance of yellow daisy flower heads, often to 8cm wide. Ordinary soil in light shade.
Seed requires cold treatment.
