Searching Genus for RUMEX

More than 100 perennial species widely distributed in the temperate world, but only a few merit inclusion in the ornamental garden.

RUMEX orbiculatus New Summer3104
Great Water Dock2.5m  Zone: 4
Found on shorelines of lakes and streams, in marshes and wet meadows of northeastern North America. Large, lance-shaped leaves are up to 60cm long. The much-branched flower stems develop through the summer and commonly attain heights of 1 to 2.5m. Small greenish flowers turn pink then reddish-brown. Very decorative, sharply triangular seed pods develop in fall. Leaves often turn a brilliant red in autumn and dried seed stalks frequently remain erect well into winter. Provides a dramatic vertical accent for pond margins or other moist to wet soil. Will self-sow, but is not invasive. Seed wild collected in Ontario.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.

RUMEX sanguineus var. sanguineusSummer3102
Red-Veined Dock30-60cm  Zone: 4
The species is native to Europe and not terribly showy. This variety, however, with strong maroon-red veining on the green leaves is a striking foliage accent for the semi-shaded garden. Cut the insignificant flower stalks when they appear.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
