Native to central and southern Europe, western Asia and North Africa, growing in grasslands. A low-growing, creeping species with toothed foliage sending up an abundance of white flower spikes, beginning in spring. If dead-headed, can be kept blooming most of the season.

Native to Europe, but widely naturalized. Above lance-shaped, serrated foliage, clusters of lipped, tubular flowers, in this variant, white. Edible: the young leaves and stems can be eaten raw in salads; the whole plant can be boiled and eaten as a potherb; and the aerial parts of the plant can be powdered and brewed in a cold infusion to make a tasty beverage.
