Searching Genus for Hydrophyllum
About 8 species of plants native to Canada and the USA growing in woodsy, humous-rich settings with divided, lobed leaves and flowers in terminal cymes. Common name derives from the fact that basal and stem leaves are often marked (water-marked) with gray blotches and spots, especially in spring and fall. Can form large colonies in time.
HYDROPHYLLUM virginianum (Moist Packed)
Native to central and eastern North America growing in rich, low woods, thickets and ravine bottoms. The good foliage is pinnately divided and coarsely toothed; in spring the upper surface of the earliest leaves have small patches of white scattered across them. Flowers are delicate; white to violet with long, projecting stamens arranged in a loose cyme. For the woodland garden in moisture-retentive soil. Seed wild collected in Ontario.
Seed has been moist-packed to preserve viability. Cold treatment required.
