Searching Genus for GILLENIA

A completely overlooked genus. Contains two species of woodland plants native to North America. Beautifully ornamental, growing best in moist areas in part sun to light shade.

GILLENIA stipulataEarly Summer1721
American Ipecac90cm  Zone: 3
Native to central and eastern USA, growing in dry, rocky, open woods. Upright and clump-forming with deeply cut, trifoliate, toothed, medium-green leaves turning bronzish red in autumn. Wiry stems above the foliage hold delicate, white (sometimes tinged pink), star-like flowers in early summer. Bloom is for about 6 weeks. Grows in similar, but drier habitats than it's better-known cousin G. trifoliata.

GILLENIA trifoliataSummer1720
90cm  Zone: 3
Native to eastern North America and traditionally used for medicinal purposes. This graceful perennial is strangely absent in most gardens. Leaves are arranged in threes along wiry stems topped by loose panicles of white flowers emerging from tubular wine-coloured sepals. Flowers are produced so freely as to appear, from a distance, like foam or "clouds of butterflies."
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.
