Searching Genus for GENTIANA

GENTIANA(GENTIAN)Family: GENTIANACEAE
A large genus of 400 species, the majority of which are low-growing alpines. Most are notable for their strong blue flowers. Source: Halda, The Genus Gentiana

GENTIANA andrewsiiLate Summer1660
Closed or Bottle Gentian30cm  Zone: 3
A North American native found throughout Ontario. Species name derived from the fact that the club-shaped, dark-blue flowers do not open, but remain in a blue bud. The flowers are borne in the leaf axils and in clusters at the top of the stem. Although unopen, they are distinctive, elegant and beautiful. Dark green lance-shaped leaves. Seed wild collected in Ontario.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.

GENTIANA clausa albaAugust-September1684
Blind Gentian30-60cm  Zone: 4
Native to Ontario and Quebec in Canada, growing in moist meadows, prairies and open woods in full sun to partial shade. This species is closely related to G. andrewsii, but accepted as a distinct species in Vascan. In G. clausa the petals remain closed at the tip with those fringes hidden by the closed tip. In the species G. andrewsii the fringes of the flower lobes are longer than the petals and thus are visible at the tip of the closed flower. Hmmm. And there you have it. This is the pretty white form of the species. Open pollinated. Photograph: Mark McDonough- Used with permission.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.

Native to eastern Siberia, Korea and Japan, where it grows in alpine meadows. This is a beautiful species used in the cut-flower trade in Japan, producing, in the fall, a supply of long-stemmed, long-lasting flowers with deep-blue blossoms.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.
