COLCHICUM autumnaleAutumn1005
Autumn Crocus10-15cm  Zone: 4
This European species is the best known and earliest- blooming of the fall-flowering bulbs. It is particularly dear to me as a vivid childhood memory of meadows in southern Germany in solid bloom. Commonly referred to as the autumn crocus colchicums are not related to crocus at all, but are actually members of the lily family. Beginning in mid-September they produce large, goblet-like blooms in shades of pink, violet or white. Colchicum bloom without leaves leading to common names such as "naked ladies" and are quite beautiful in their simplicity. The leaves do not appear until spring, arising then without flowers, but (hopefully) with large seed pods, a fascinating delayed mechanism of seed production.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.
