Searching Genus for Astragalus

A large genus of over 2,000 species of annuals, perennials and shrubs native throughout the temperate world with pinnate foliage and pea-like flowers in spikes or racemes.

Native to North America, growing in prairies, thickets and woodland borders, moist meadows near rivers and fields. A robust plant with compound foliage topped by a whorled raceme crowded with creamy flowers, which sometimes have yellow or green tints. These are followed by oval pods with pointed tips. This striking member of the pea family is an important food for birds, as it retains its seed late into the fall and early winter. Wild collected in Ontario.

Native to north-eastern North America growing on alvar or in oak barrens. An uncommon to rare species with compound foliage and a leafy stem. Clusters of white to cream flowers. Ovoid seed receptacles follow (these differentiate it from A. canadensis). Seed wild collected in Ontario.
