This fast-growing annual is native to Florida, central America and the West Indies, growing on rocky, open ground. The thistle-like leaves are greyish-green; thickly veined with white and thorny along the outside edges. Bright yellow poppies in summer to fall.

Gerard, the herbalist, wrote that the name devil’s fig came from the fruit which, ‘doth much resemble a figge in shape and bignesse’, and goes on to add that if one were stuck in someone’s throat, ‘doubtless it would send him packing either to heaven or to hell’.
