Searching Genus for Allium

ALLIUM
A large genus with upwards of 700 bulbous species native throughout the northern hemisphere. Many are beautiful ornamentals.

A NOTE ON ALLIUM GERMINATION

Many species of Allium requiring cold treatment can be sown in late summer to early fall, with pots kept outdoors until late fall to early winter. This short, superficial cold treatment is often enough to have seedlings sprouted before the onset of winter; which can then be brought indoors and grown on.

Very limited this year.

ALLIUM spirale New Late Summer222
15cm  Zone: 3
Much nomenclature confusion here. This used to be recognized as a dwarf, glaucous and twisted form of A. senescens, sometimes also referred to as A. senescens glaucum. I now believe that the old name for these spiral-foliaged forms has been resurrected, although not necessarily for what we have known as A. senecens glaucum. Whew! Whatever it is called, this is a first rate plant, often called the "Curly, Swirly Onion." Foliage is glaucous, grey-green and twists and turns in curls, making a fantastic foliage effect. Pom-poms of fragrant lavender-pink flowers top this in late summer.
20 seeds  $4.25

ALLIUM tricoccum New Early Summer191
Wild Garlic or Leek15-50cm  Zone: 4
The Wild Leek is included for its culinary rather than ornamental value. Native to rich, moist woods of eastern North America and a spring delicacy in the farmers markets here, as both the leaves and bulbs are delicious in soups and salads. The leaves rise and wither before the flowers appear, leaving a naked stem topped by clusters of creamy white flowers. Seed wild collected in Ontario. Very limited this year.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.
