Searching Genus for Actaea

Derives its common name from the very poisonous berries. Genus is comprised of 8 species of elegant perennials native to rich moist woods in the North Temperate zone with large compound leaves, small white flowers in racemes and showy, oval, glossy berries in the Fall. Baneberries are woodland species and do well in shady locations, particularly in moist, humus-rich soil.

Native to eastern North America and a handsome plant for the shaded area of a woodland or border. Deep green compound leaves similar to Astilbe form an elegant clump. Fluffy, fringed white flowers in late spring and showy pea-sized white berries in the fall on thick scarlet stalks. The foliage remains fresh all season and the berries are a treasure into late fall. Seed wild collected in Nova Scotia.
