Searching Genus for ASARUM

About 60 species native to North temperate areas. The common name refers to the ginger-like smell when the roots are bruised or cut. All species prefer woodland conditions, slightly acid soil, shade and constant moisture.

Native North American with low tufts of green heart-shaped leaves. Brown, bell-shaped flowers are inconspicuous and hidden under the leaves. A wonderful groundcover for the woodland garden. Seed wild collected in Ontario.

Evergreen plant with dark-green, very glossy, leathery, heart-shaped foliage. Inconspicuous brown flowers appear under the foliage in spring. A beautiful groundcover for shade, tolerating less than ideal conditions, but growing and self-sowing more vigorously with better conditions. Limited this year.
Germination Instructions: Seed is moist packed to preserve viability. Cold treatment required.
